Article: Forty Years of See Saw

Forty Years of See Saw
This year, See Saw turns forty. We didn't want to mark it with anything too grand — that has never really been our way. Instead, we wanted to pause for a moment, look back at where we began, and say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been part of the story.
Where it all began
Our story starts in the rag trade of Sydney's Chippendale, where manufacturing first began — among the workrooms, cutting tables and sewing machines of what was once the heart of Australian garment making. As Oriental Enterprises, one of Australia's original heritage clothing companies, designing and manufacturing everything: kidswear, sleepwear, denim and womenswear.
It was from those roots that See Saw was born in 1986, founded by John Wilson and with the late Mr Geoff Evans. From the very beginning, the idea was simple: beautiful womenswear in quality natural fibres, designed in Australia, made to fit well, wear easily and last for years.
Two generations, one family
Forty years on, See Saw is still a proudly Australian-owned, wholesome family business — and one that is truly loved, by the women who wear it and the boutiques who stock it. Today we're run by the second generation of our family and based on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, where decades of manufacturing, importing and quality know-how sit alongside fresh seasonal creativity.
We're a garment business, but at heart we've always been a people business — built on family, trust, knowledge, respect and dependability.
Australian design at heart
Every See Saw collection is designed here in Australia, for the way Australian women really live. Our designs are shaped by our climate, our light and our relaxed, social way of dressing — easy shapes, flattering fits and playful colour that move effortlessly from a long lunch with friends to everyday life. Forty years of designing for the same woman means we know her well, and we still love dressing her.
Still in love with natural fibres
Some things haven't changed at all. Our love of Australian merino wool, French linen and premium cotton shaped who we were in 1986, and it shapes every piece we design today. These are fibres that breathe in our Australian climate, drape beautifully and only get better with wear.
Made with care, not in excess
We still release two considered collections each year — Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter — available through select local boutiques across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Because we produce only what is ordered, we keep our quality high and our waste low, and our retail partners remain what they've always been: an extension of the See Saw family.
Thank you
To our boutiques and stockists, our sales agents and showrooms, our makers, our team — and most of all, to the women who wear See Saw, some of you for decades now — thank you. You are the reason we're still here, and still loving what we do.
Here's to the next chapter.
With love, Amy, John & Hayley
